Man Pleads Guilty to Receiving Child Sexual Abuse Material via Zoom Chat Rooms
A 35-year-old Dorchester man, Beau Christopher Benson, has admitted guilt to the receipt of child pornography during a court appearance in Boston. The plea was entered in front of U.S. District Court Judge Myong J. Joun, who has scheduled Benson’s sentencing for July 8, 2024. This comes after Benson was charged by criminal complaint in November 2023.

Details of the Case
The case against Benson began to unfold in April 2023, when law enforcement received reports of his involvement in Zoom video chat rooms dedicated to sharing and viewing child sexual abuse material (CSAM). Benson was found to have recorded his interactions in these chat rooms, saving the videos – which featured CSAM and discussions with others about the illicit content – to his social media account. Around 15 video files containing CSAM were discovered saved in his Dropbox account, with two of them depicting children aged approximately two to four years old.
Legal Consequences
The charge of receipt of child pornography carries significant penalties, including a mandatory minimum sentence of five years and a maximum of 20 years in federal prison. Benson also faces at least five years and up to a lifetime of supervised release, as well as a fine of up to $250,000. The final sentencing decision will be made by a federal district court judge, based on the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and applicable statutes.
Authorities’ Response
Acting United States Attorney Joshua S. Levy and Jodi Cohen, the Special Agent in Charge of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Boston Division, jointly announced the developments in Benson’s case. Assistant U.S. Attorney David G. Tobin, from the Major Crimes Unit, is responsible for prosecuting the case.
