Brother and Girlfriend of Tennessee Deputy Killer Arrested as Manhunt Continues
The search for Kenneth DeHart, the suspect accused of killing a Tennessee police deputy and injuring another, has entered its fourth day, with significant developments in the case. Authorities have announced the arrest of DeHart’s brother, Marcus DeHart, and his girlfriend, Carrie Mathews, in connection with the ongoing investigation.
Kenneth DeHart, 42, is accused of fatally shooting Blount County Sheriff’s Deputy Greg McCowan, 43, and injuring Deputy Shelby Eggers, 22, during a traffic stop in Maryville on Thursday evening. In a press conference held on Friday, Blount County District Attorney Ryan Desmond announced that Marcus DeHart, 41, has been arrested and charged with being an accessory to the crime. He is accused of aiding the suspect after the homicide. Marcus DeHart has been jailed and is scheduled to appear in court on Monday.
Carrie Mathews, 32, identified as Kenneth DeHart’s girlfriend, was arrested on her own “accessory after the fact” charge in adjoining Sevier County. She was taken into custody on Thursday night and has been held in jail since Saturday.
In light of these arrests, authorities have urged the public to come forward with any information regarding Kenneth DeHart’s whereabouts. To incentivize cooperation, the reward for information leading to his capture has been increased to $100,000.
The tragic incident unfolded when the two deputies initiated a traffic stop on a sport utility vehicle driven by Kenneth DeHart. However, when asked to exit the vehicle, DeHart refused. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) reported that the deputies deployed a stun gun, which had no effect. At that point, DeHart produced a gun and opened fire, injuring both officers. One of the deputies returned fire, but DeHart managed to flee the scene.
Greg McCowan, who joined the sheriff’s office in 2020 after serving as a reserve deputy, tragically succumbed to his injuries at a local hospital. The loss of McCowan, a dedicated law enforcement officer, has deeply affected the community.
Warrants have been issued for Kenneth DeHart on charges of first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, and being a felon in possession of a firearm. Tennessee Bureau of Investigation Director David Rausch expressed determination in apprehending DeHart, vowing to leave no stone unturned in the manhunt.
“We’re going to turn every rock over,” Rausch stated. “We’ll find him, there’s no doubt.”.
