According to the affidavit, the crime spree began around 10 a.m. when Craft carjacked a woman and her two children at the Center Chapel Missionary Baptist Church on East Shelby Drive. The woman reported that she was sitting in her blue 2010 Nissan Maxima when a man wearing dark clothing approached her with a handgun. Craft broke the driver’s glass and threatened to kill the woman if she called the police.

The quick thinking of the woman and her children allowed them to escape the car before Craft sped off east on Shelby Drive, leaving them unharmed.

Tragic Shooting at Zazaas Smoke and Vape Shop

Shortly after the carjacking, gunfire erupted at Zazaas Smoke and Vape Shop on East Shelby Drive. Inside the store, authorities discovered the lifeless body of Yahya Fares, who had been shot multiple times. The store’s surveillance video showed a masked man in dark clothing arriving in a blue Nissan Maxima. The assailant shot Fares several times before stealing an AK-style firearm from behind the counter.

Arrest and Discovery of Stolen Items

The abandoned Nissan Maxima was later found at an ALDI on South Perkins Road. However, Memphis Police soon learned that Craft was driving a silver 2010 Nissan Altima instead. They attempted to pull him over, but he refused, leading to a high-speed chase. Craft eventually jumped out of the car and fled on foot, but he was later apprehended at a residence on Haleville Road.

During a search of the Nissan Altima, officers discovered a Glock 19 9mm, an AK-47, and merchandise stolen from the smoke shop. Craft reportedly admitted to carjacking both vehicles and to the murder of Yahya Fares at the smoke shop.

Additional Incidents

While the initial affidavit does not provide details, police have linked Craft to a shooting at a Citgo gas station on Commerce Circle, where two women were shot and a child was injured by a dog bite.

Charges Filed Against Craft

As a result of these horrifying events, Craft has been charged with first-degree murder, carjacking, especially aggravated robbery, two counts of aggravated child abuse, intentionally evading arrest in an automobile, and evading arrest.

Memphis residents are still reeling from the shocking series of incidents, but the swift actions of law enforcement have brought some solace to the community. Authorities continue to investigate any potential connections between Craft and other crimes in the area.
