Homicide Investigation: Jaqoin Carpenter, 24, of Birmingham Shot and Killed at Oporto Madrid Blvd. Intersection – Birmingham Police Department

BIRMINGHAM — The Birmingham Police Department is investigating a homicide after a man was shot and killed at an intersection on Oporto Madrid Blvd. The incident occurred on Tuesday, 9th January 2024.

\"\"The victim, Jaqoin Carpenter, 24, from Birmingham, has been identified.

At around 1:15 p.m., officers from the East Precinct were sent to a Shot Spotter alert at 7701 5th Avenue North. They were informed that a person had been shot inside a vehicle in the 500 Block of Oporto Madrid Boulevard North.

“When officers arrived at the scene, they found the victim lying unresponsive in a van,” said Fitzgerald. “He had been shot.”

Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel arrived and took the victim to UAB Hospital with life-threatening injuries. Sadly, on Thursday, 11th January 2024, the victim died at UAB Hospital.

“Based on the initial investigation, it appears that the victim was in his vehicle when an unknown vehicle pulled up beside him at the intersection of 5th Avenue North and Oporto Madrid Boulevard North,” explained Fitzgerald. “An unknown suspect or suspects fired shots into the victim’s vehicle. The suspect’s vehicle then fled the scene.”

No one has been arrested in connection with the incident.
