GRANITEVILLE, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) – A man from Aiken County, South Carolina has been charged by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) for pointing a shotgun at deputies almost two years ago, an action that led to him being shot. The suspect, Cameron Convie Neil Duncan, 26, faces two counts of pointing and presenting a firearm at a person.

The incident occurred on February 3, 2022, when deputies attempted to stop a stolen white pickup truck at a public safety checkpoint on Abear Street near Main Street in Graniteville. The driver of the truck, later identified as Duncan, sped away, leading deputies on a pursuit. The chase ended on Trolley Line Road near Morningside Drive, where Duncan exited the vehicle armed with a shotgun and attempted to carjack a passing motorist.

When confronted by deputies, Duncan pointed his weapon at them, prompting the deputies to open fire. The suspect then fled the scene but was later found hiding in a shed on Seneca Avenue by the Aiken bloodhound tracking team. He was discovered with an apparent gunshot wound to his upper left chest and was taken to a Georgia hospital for treatment.

In addition to the charges related to the incident, Duncan also faces other charges in Aiken County, including breach of trust with fraudulent intent, failure to stop for a blue light, driving under suspension, and possession of a stolen vehicle.

The deputies involved in the shooting have had their own share of developments since the incident. Tillman Rushton went on to become the new Wagener fire chief in October, while Justin Rutland resigned in March 2022, facing unrelated criminal charges.

The Aiken County Sheriff’s Office requested SLED’s involvement in the investigation due to the deputies’ use of force. SLED’s thorough investigation has now led to the charges against Duncan, bringing closure to this nearly two-year-old case.
