A search warrant recently filed in Spokane County has provided additional details about the events leading up to the fatal shooting of 34-year-old Kerry Jones-Hilburg by Spokane police at the North Colton Walmart. According to the warrant, officers shot and killed Jones-Hilburg after reportedly seeing an “outline of a dark-colored firearm” on his shoulder holster. The incident occurred on December 3, when two on-duty officers witnessed Jones-Hilburg shoplifting from the store. They observed him using a magnetic key to remove security devices from items before concealing them on his person.

The officers approached Jones-Hilburg just as he was leaving the store and attempted to confront him. However, he immediately began to resist their efforts. Despite being tased, Jones-Hilburg managed to break free from the officers and continued to struggle with them both inside and outside the Walmart. One officer’s body camera footage showed Jones-Hilburg being knocked to the floor after being tased a second time. Shortly after, one of the officers yelled, “He’s got a gun!” to which Jones-Hilburg responded, “No, I don’t!” He then allegedly reached towards his chest with his left hand, prompting Officer Karl Richardson to shoot him once, resulting in his death. The body camera footage revealed that Jones-Hilburg continued to resist until he lost consciousness.

In addition to the body camera footage, investigators also reviewed Walmart’s security footage, which showed Jones-Hilburg on his cell phone while gathering items. This led investigators to suspect that he may have been working with another individual. A gun and ammunition were found near Jones-Hilburg’s body, and it was later discovered that the gun had been reported stolen earlier in the year.

A urine sample collected from Jones-Hilburg tested positive for amphetamines and methamphetamines, according to the warrant. The Spokane County Medical Examiner has confirmed his identity. A GoFundMe page has been created to assist Jones-Hilburg’s family with funeral expenses.

The incident has sparked public interest and concern, with many questioning the use of force by the police officers involved. Investigations are ongoing, and the search warrant provides important evidence for further examination. The Spokane Police Department continues to cooperate with the investigation into the shooting.
