Police respond to shooting at University of Nevada, Las Vegas campus

A mass shooting occurred at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) on Wednesday morning, leaving three people dead and one injured. The gunman, identified as a 67-year-old career college professor, had applied for a job at UNLV but was not accepted. The shooting took place at Beam Hall, where the college’s Lee Business School is located.

The incident unfolded at around 11:45am, prompting warnings of an “active shooter” threat. Students, staff, and faculty took shelter in classrooms and offices until law enforcement arrived. The suspect was shot and killed by responding officers. Several others suffered panic attacks, while minor injuries were reported among the officers.

Authorities are currently searching through the gunman’s professional writings to determine a possible motive for the shooting. The suspect had previously worked at East Carolina University in North Carolina.

The UNLV campus is located just a short distance from the site of the 2017 Mandalay Bay Hotel mass shooting, the deadliest mass shooting by a single gunman in US history. The incident left 60 people dead and hundreds injured.

President Joe Biden condemned the gun violence and expressed condolences to the victims’ families. He called for Congress to take action to address the epidemic of gun violence in the country.

This shooting marks the 80th school shooting in the US this year, with 51 reported on K-12 campuses and 29 on university and college campuses. President Biden emphasized that such violence should not become the norm.

Classes at UNLV have been canceled through Friday, and a ground stop was issued at Harry Reid International Airport in response to the shooting. The investigation into the incident is ongoing, as authorities work to provide support to the affected students and community.
