Reynoldsburg Man Among Eight U.S. Airmen Killed in Osprey Crash off the Coast of Japan

A Reynoldsburg man was among the eight US Airmen who tragically lost their lives in an aircraft crash off the coast of Japan. Senior Airman Brian K. Johnson, 32, was on board the CV-22 Osprey aircraft that caught fire and crashed during a training exercise on November 29.

Since the crash, search and rescue operations involving both the US and Japanese militaries have been ongoing. On Monday, the majority of the wreckage was discovered. The Air Force Special Operations Command confirmed the identities of the eight Airmen on Tuesday.

Johnson, a flight engineer assigned to the 21st Special Operations Squadron, 353rd Special Operations Wing, was based at Yokota Air Base in Japan.

The other seven Airmen who lost their lives in the crash have also been identified. They are Major Jeffrey Hoernemann, 32, from Minnesota; Major Eric Spendlove, 36, from Utah; Major Luke Unrath, 34, from California; Captain Terrell Brayman, 32, from New York; Technical Sgt. Zachary Lavoy, 33, from Florida; Staff Sgt. Jake Turnage, 25, from Georgia; and Staff Sgt. Jacob Galliher, 24, from Massachusetts.

So far, the remains of three of the Airmen have been recovered, and efforts are underway to recover the bodies of three more. However, two sets of remains are still unaccounted for.

This tragic incident has left the families and colleagues of the Airmen devastated. The loss of these brave servicemen is a reminder of the risks they face in their line of duty. The US and Japanese authorities will continue to investigate the cause of the crash to prevent similar incidents in the future.
