Cyclone Michaung Live Updates: Two Killed and Several Areas of Chennai Inundated as Heavy Rainfall and Severe Waterlogging Continue

Cyclone Michaung Live Updates: As Cyclone Michaung approaches the North Tamil Nadu coast, heavy rainfall and severe waterlogging have caused chaos in several areas of Chennai. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy rainfall in Chennai and surrounding areas for the next 24 hours. Balachandran, the Chennai Regional Meteorology Director, has stated that Cyclone Michaung, currently 100 km from Chennai, is expected to intensify into a severe cyclonic storm by noon today. It will move parallel to the coast of north Tamil Nadu and South Andhra Pradesh, crossing Nellore-Machilipatnam tomorrow at 4 noon. Heavy rainfall and strong winds will continue in Chennai and surrounding districts.

According to Skymet, Chennai’s Numgambakkam recorded 82 mm of rainfall in the last 3 hours between 08:30 -11:30 hours today. The heavy rain is expected to continue until tonight, and local flooding is possible at many places. With water accumulation, vehicles have been completely submerged, and heavy traffic jams have been witnessed in several parts of the city, including Chennai’s Chrompet GST Road.

Due to the heavy rainfall, the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has advised citizens to stay indoors. The total rainfall has reached 340mm as of this morning. GCC has also issued helpline numbers for citizens to seek assistance with grievances or flood-related issues.

Chennai Airport has announced the closure of departure and arrivals till tonight due to severe weather conditions. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel have been actively involved in rescuing people from waterlogged areas in Tiruvallur district. The Thillai Ganga Nagar Subway in Chennai’s Alandur has been closed due to heavy waterlogging.

Train services have been severely affected, with eleven express trains cancelled after the water level reached the danger mark at Bridge No. 14 between Vyasarpadi and Basin Bridge due to heavy downpours. The NDRF and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams have been deployed in the city to handle the upcoming cyclone.

Unfortunately, two people were killed and one critically injured after a newly constructed wall collapsed in Chennai’s Kanathur area. The deceased have been identified as Shek Afraj and MD Tofik from Jharkhand. The incident occurred amidst heavy rainfall and strong winds.

Citizens are urged to stay indoors and take necessary precautions as Cyclone Michaung continues to bring heavy rainfall and strong winds to Chennai and surrounding areas.
