Tragedy Strikes: Teacher Stabbed to Death by Former Student

All Bassey Sardauna, a teacher at the Government Day Secondary School Model in Jalingo, Taraba State, was known for his dedication to his students’ well-being and their pursuit of a better future. However, his good nature seemed to have earned him hatred among some errant students, leading to his tragic death on November 9.

When our correspondent visited the school on November 22, there were no security measures in place. The students were playing on the field and sitting on the fence, while teachers gathered in groups, possibly discussing the incident. One teacher expressed fear and stated that there is a need for trauma healing for staff and students who were close to Bassey before his murder.

Two other teachers from different schools in the state also expressed concerns about the lack of security in schools, as most of them do not have perimeter fences, making them vulnerable to attacks. They appealed to the government and community leaders to prioritize security in schools.

A student who witnessed the altercation between Bassey and the former student recounted the events leading up to the tragedy. Bassey had disciplined the former student for not following instructions, which led to a commotion. The former student had come to the school to sign his Air Force application form and had sought assistance from one of the teachers.

The school principal, Mr. Roberts Moses, who took over after the incident, stated that the school has been in touch with the police, and security measures will be implemented soon. He also mentioned plans to organize counseling sessions for both teachers and students to address the psychological effects of the incident.

Bassey’s wife, Mercy, revealed that her husband had a premonition of danger before his death. She described the signs of unease he had been experiencing and how he had changed his mind about going to work on the day of the incident. She expressed her grief and uncertainty about how to cope without him.
