On January 11, 2020, police responded to a break-and-enter call at a commercial lot in Cold Lake. The situation quickly became tense, leading to an officer-involved shooting. ASIRT’s comprehensive investigation, conducted in accordance with current protocols, concluded that the officer’s response was justified given the perceived threat to his life.

The report states that the responding officer arrived at the scene around 2:32 a.m. and encountered a red car parked near the lot’s entrance. As the officer positioned his marked police truck behind the car, it suddenly backed into the police vehicle, prompting the officer to draw his handgun and exit his truck.
The situation escalated further as the red car continued its aggressive behavior. The officer issued commands and requested assistance over the police radio. In a span of two seconds, the officer discharged his firearm four times.
Witness officers quickly arrived and secured the occupants of the red car. The driver, who had sustained a gunshot wound to his left calf, was apprehended. Emergency medical services were called, and the driver was released from the hospital a few hours later.
During the investigation, video footage from nearby businesses showed the activities of the driver and an unidentified individual before the officer’s arrival. The report revealed that the unknown individual appeared to be carrying a firearm.
