Taylor Swift fans, known as Swifties, have come together to raise money for the family of a fan who tragically passed away after attending one of the singer’s shows in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Ana Clara Benevides had gone to see Swift’s performance on Friday at Estádio Olímpico Nilton Santos.

Initially, Benevides’ family expressed their disappointment, stating that concert organizers hadn’t provided support in transporting her body back to their hometown. However, thanks to the generosity of Swifties, the family has now reached its fundraising goal. In a video posted on social media, Benevides’ mother expressed her gratitude to everyone who donated, saying, “Today I realize how loved my daughter was. From my heart, thank you all.”

Swift herself took to Instagram to express her sorrow over the loss, stating, “I can’t believe I’m writing these words but it is with a shattered heart that I say we lost a fan earlier tonight before my show. I can’t even tell you how devastated I am by this.” While Swift had initially stated that Benevides passed away before the concert, a friend of the fan revealed that she fell ill during the beginning of the show.

While an official cause of death has yet to be announced, many believe that Brazil’s extreme heat wave played a significant role. The high temperatures even led Swift to postpone another Rio show. Swifties in Brazil have been vocal about supporting Benevides’ family in any way they can. One fan account helped with the crowdfunding effort and later announced that it would stop promoting the campaign after its success, as per the family’s request.

Fans had planned a moment of silence for Benevides during another Swift concert, but it was canceled out of concern that it could be seen as critical of the singer.
