San Diego Police Release Bodycam Video of Deadly Confrontation with Armed Suspect, Imanol Aparicio

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The San Diego Police Department has released body camera footage of a fatal encounter in the City Heights neighborhood involving a suspect who was allegedly armed with a gun.

The incident occurred on November 13th in the 4000 block of Wightman Street. According to officers, they received a 911 call reporting an armed man shooting a woman on Polk Avenue. At around 11:30 p.m., officers found the suspect on Wightman Street after he had injured the woman and fled the scene on Polk Avenue. The San Diego Police Department is still investigating the exact circumstances that led to the shooting.

The suspect has been identified as 22-year-old Imanol Aparicio, according to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office. Bodycam footage, which has been uploaded to SDPD’s YouTube page, shows officers attempting to engage with Aparicio, who then started running and appeared to be carrying a gun. Warning: The video contains graphic content.

In the video, officers can be heard warning Aparicio to comply, but he refused. Moments later, shots were fired. The sheriff’s department stated that “the suspect’s behavior prompted officers to discharge their duty weapons.” Officers are also heard in the video instructing Aparicio to put the gun down, but he continued to ignore their commands and produced the firearm.

Aparicio was shot multiple times and subsequently stopped moving. He was later pronounced dead at the hospital. The San Diego County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that Aparicio was in possession of a loaded, unregistered handgun.

No officers were injured during the incident, which is still under investigation by the sheriff’s department. The officers involved in the shooting have been identified as Sgt. Matthew Ruggiero, Officer Jeremy Avalos, and Officer Jonah Tafoya, all serving in the Mid-City Division of the SDPD.
